THIS POEM WILL BE SAD IF YOU DON’T READ IT,
OR, POEM FOR MY SPOON

loneliness is still time spent / with the world
-“Someday I’ll Love Ocean Vuong,” Ocean Vuong

Don’t worry,
I know

the darkness held
inside a mouth,

the loneliness,
coming out damp,

a breath of light,
and then back in,

the softness of a tongue,
a partner’s steady breath

as grounding as breakfast.
Spoon, I know the bump,

from when somebody bent you
out of shape & back again, I know

that it is still there. Spoon,
I know you’re anxious

for time spent lightly
loafing over granola

in a white Mikasa bowl,
a day when you feel

a thumb-size hollow
fill up briefly—

puddle of almond milk,
Saturday morning sun—

a day when your body knows
it is here with the world.
